Herbs for Acne

Are there any herbs recommended for acne?
- Please see Herb Safety
  • In the book, Herbs of Choice, herb expert Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., recommends arnica cream as a useful treatment for acne. Be aware that arnica should not be consumed orally.

  • Tea tree oil is used as a topical antiseptic agent in Australia, and it has shown some value as a topical antiseptic for acne. The American Journal of Infection Control found that tea tree oil eliminates foreign bacteria on the skin. It must be used with care since irritation can occur in sensitive individuals.

  • Commission E -- an expert committee on herbal remedies established by Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices -- has approved medicinal (brewer's) yeast as a supplement for chronic forms of acne; chamomile (external) as a compress for skin and mucous membrane inflammations; and calendula (external) for topical use as an anti-inflammatory.

  • It's a good idea to consult with your physician and an herbalist to ensure safety when using herbs.
