A Holistic Approach to Herpes

Research

  • Acyclovir and cesarean section in women with herpes. Taking the antiviral drug acyclovir to treat recurrent herpes in pregnant women (whose first clinical episode of genital herpes occurred during pregnancy) reduced the need for cesarean section. Acyclovir use was not found to be harmful to the fetus. Obstet Gynecol, Jan. 1996.
  • Diseases linked to herpes. The two major diseases associated with both herpes simplex viruses are meningitis (an infection of the membranes enveloping the brain and spinal cord) and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Intervirology, 1997.
  • Herpes: a re-emerging disease. Genital herpes infections continue to increase in number every year for many reasons — such as unrecognized symptoms, no symptoms at all and imperfect lab tests (that indicate a false negative). Infect Dis Clin North Am, March 1998.
